James Richardson Mulholland, Eden, Portglenone
The photograph below is probably James Richardson Mulholland.
James was born in 1861. He was the son of Thompson Mulholland and lived and farmed at Hill House, on the Ballymacpeake Road, in Eden, near Portglenone. He worshipped in Innisrush – i.e. Tamlaght O’Crilly Lower (Church of Ireland).
On the 3 October 1895, 34 year old James Richardson married 27 year old Charlotte (McGaw) Smyth.
They had four boys and a girl – Thompson (Tommy), the oldest, was born in 1896. And then John Smyth Mulholland (John), Charlotte, James Richardson Mulholland (Jim) and then the youngest, William Mulholland (Willie).
Charlotte died on the 31st March 1913 (1868-1913). She was only 45 years old.
Their youngest (Willie) was only 7 seven years old, when his mother passed on.
Life was not easy for James Richardson Mulholland – having to work a farm, and raise 5 children, without their mother.
He outlived his wife by another ten years, dying on the 11th of November 1923, aged 62 years.
William Mulholland died on the 7th of September 1973 aged 67 years; John Smyth Mulholland died on the 11th of September 1973 aged 75 years; James Richardson Mulholland died on the 28th of September 1978 aged 77 years.
Thompson (Tommy) Mulholland, who had inherited the farm from his father, was 83 years old, when he died on the 19th of December 1979. Four years later, his wife Isabella Burnside Mulholland passed on. She died on the 13th of December 1983, aged 76 years.
