Late July 2019, the train took me back in time, up to Ballymena, and then a taxi the final four miles to Ahoghill.  It’s funny, I’ve been through Ahoghill many thousands of times over the years (due to study, work and leisure), but I never had the opportunity to stop and walk around and discover it’s side streets.  This was a first.  A friendly bloke near the centre of the village, gave me excellent directions, as to where to find the many churches in Ahoghill.  The nearest apparently was Brookside, at 17 Brook Street, thus it was my first port of call that summer day.

Brookside Church in Ahoghill

Brookside Church in Ahoghill

Brief History of Brookside Presbyterian Church Ahoghill – aka Third Ahoghill

The early history of Brookside overlaps with that of the nearby Trinity Church.  On perusing some very old local texts, I ran across a delightful history of the church, from it’s origins, up until the early 1930s, by the Reverend Aston Robinson (the Rector at Carnlough and Cushendall between 1927 and 1949).

The Reverend Robinson says: “The congregration of Brookside now worships in what was formerly Second Ahoghill (Trinity) Meeting-house. What is known to-day as First Ahoghill was established under the auspices of the Synod of Ulster. Trinity, or Second Ahoghill, was erected by the Secession Synod, between 1761 and 1770.”

“At the time of Mr. Carmichael’s settlement here in 1791, he had been for some time ministering to the people of Kirklnriola and the Moor Meeting-house, and resided at Galgorm within the bounds of Ahoghili congregation. Many of the Ahoghill people thought that the amalgamation ail these stations under one clergyman would be injurious to the cause of religion. Thereupon, about one-half them left the Anti-Burghers and established a Burgher Secession congregation over which the Rev. John Marr was ordained as their first minister on the 6th of December 1800.”

“His ministry extended over forty-three years, he died on the 3rd of February 1844. His successor, the Reverend Stewart Fullarton, was ordained on the 7th of May 1845. He was released form this charge in May 1857 and died soon afterwards.”

“The next minister was the Rev James McClung Abernethy. who was ordained on the 25th of March 1858. He resigned this charge on the 19th of April 1859, to go to Australia. He was installed in Tower Hill, Koroit, 1860-63, and in Eaglehawk, 1863-70, and in Sandridge, 1870. He died in Melbourne in 1904, aged 74 years.”

“Mr Abernethy was succeeded in Ahoghill by the reverend Robert Mitchell, a licentiate of the Banbridge Presbytery. He was ordained on the 14th of December 1859. He retired from active duties on the 28th of May 1900. He was clerk of the Ahoghill Presbyery from 1884-1900.”

“The Reverend Robert H. Wlison, a licentiate of Coleraine Presbytery, ordained on the 8th November, 1900, as colleague and successor to Mr. Mitchell. Mr Mitchell died on the 8th June 1901.”

“During Mr. Wilson’s ministry extensive repairs were made to congregational property. A new manse was built. On 9th October 1908, reopening services were held, which were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Megaw of Belfast, with the result that an outlay of £1,300 was met by generous contributions. Mr. Wilson was a very popular and successful pastor and was greatly beloved by the Ahoghill people. He resigned this charge on the 8th day of May, 1912, having accepted a call to St James’ in Ballymoney.”

“Mr. Wilson was succeeded by the Rev. Thomas George Moore, who was ordained on the 1st of October 1912. He demitted this charge on the 1st December 1916, having accepted a call to Prince’s Park Church in Liverpool.”

“His successor, the Rev. William John McGeagh, a licentiate of Magherafelt Presbytery. was ordained on the 3lst May 1917. Mr McGeagh resigned this charge on the 29th of December 1919, having accepted a call to the united charge to First and Second Moneymore. Afterwards he was settled Ballymacarret, Belfast, and then in First Larne.”

“The next minister was the Reverend David Moore McConnell, formerly of Katesbridge, who was installed on the 29th of June 1920. He met his death owing to a careless cyclist, who knocked him down. He died on the 15th of December 1931, aged 56 years.”

“The present pastor, the Reverend A. A. G. Kilpatrick, who had spent some years in Canada, was received by the Cavan Presbytery in 1919, and was installed in Donegal congregration as colleague to the Reverend R. Neilson. He resigned the charge of Donegal on the 13th July 1926, having accepted a call to Clougherney in County Tyrone. he resigned the charge of Clougherney on the 14th of July 1932, and was installed in Brookside on the 27th of July 1932.”

There is a very informative time-line of the Church’s history, at it’s website.
