It was late July. The sun was shining brightly as I slowly made my way up Church Street in Ahoghill, past the Old Church Yard, on past Trinity Presbyterian Church, and ultimately to St Colmanell’s Church of Ireland.

Trinity Church – A Brief History

The origins of Trinity come from the very late 1700s.  A number of Presbyterian tenants worshipped in an old chapel not far from Galgorm Castle.  Within their number were descendants of skilled crafts people that the castle’s Dr Colville had previously employed to do internal work in the building – namely decorative and oak panelling work in the castle.  An influential family amongst these people was that of the Raphaels (their headstones are still visible in the graveyard). William Raphael’s eldest daughter married Thomas Carmichael in 1798.  Carmichael had preached at Kirkinriola and the Braid.  The United Irish rebellion of 1798, along with disagreements over a new minister, caused division within the small church.  One half of the congregation issued a call to Mr Carmichael and left, with the intention of building a new church.  This resulted in the First Secession Church being built in 1806. Many years later the church would become known as Trinity.

The stone above the church door (see the photo further down this page) confirms that the church was built in 1806; rebuilt in 1840, and renovated in 1896. The 1896 work was so extensive, as to be essentially a new construction.  The basic church structure that we see today, is that of the 1896 work.
