Trinity Presbyterian Church Ahoghill Gravestones

It was late July. The sun was shining brightly as I slowly made my way up Church Street in Ahoghill, past the Old Church Yard, on past Trinity Presbyterian Church, and ultimately to St Colmanell’s Church of Ireland.

Trinity Church – A Brief History

The origins of Trinity come from the very late 1700s.  A number of Presbyterian tenants worshipped in an old chapel not far from Galgorm Castle.  Within their number were descendants of skilled crafts people that the castle’s Dr Colville had previously employed to do internal work in the building – namely decorative and oak panelling work in the castle.  An influential family amongst these people was that of the Raphaels (their headstones are still visible in the graveyard). William Raphael’s eldest daughter married Thomas Carmichael in 1798.  Carmichael had preached at Kirkinriola and the Braid.  The United Irish rebellion of 1798, along with disagreements over a new minister, caused division within the small church.  One half of the congregation issued a call to Mr Carmichael and left, with the intention of building a new church.  This resulted in the First Secession Church being built in 1806. Many years later the church would become known as Trinity.

The stone above the church door (see the photo further down this page) confirms that the church was built in 1806; rebuilt in 1840, and renovated in 1896. The 1896 work was so extensive, as to be essentially a new construction.  The basic church structure that we see today, is that of the 1896 work.

  1. The Neely grave is that of my great uncle’s first wife Anna Watson (her sister is also buried in the same grave). Her husband was George Neely who was quite influential in Trinity church. His name crops us alongside that of the Rev Frederick Buick in one or more of the trilogy of books published by the Mid-Antrim Historical Society(1990) about Ahoghill; Buick’s Ahoghill (Part 1), Ahoghill Folk (Part 2) and Around Ahoghill (Part 3).

There were connections too with the 3rd Presbyterian church, Brookside where several of George’s siblings are buried. Sadly many of those headstone have eroded and/or been removed.

George was known locally as Master Neely because he was the headmaster of the Ballybeg school as well as seeing to the farm he inherited from his father in Ahoghill. He remarried after Anna’s death and had four children and the whole family emigrated to Canada (Alberta) in 1921 where his descendants still live and farm today.

I have the books and some photos if they are of any interest. There are many old photos in the books.

    1. Fascinating post, Carol. I meant to say this to you earlier. My maternal grandfather had Neely as one of his middle names. He was originally from Maghera. I wonder where his name came from, and if any links to your Neelys.

You will be pleased to know that my next church is Brookside. I have been working on the photos and web page, for several months.

I would love, when you get a chance in the future, to see some of those old photos.

Indeed, it would be awesome, if you felt inclined, to see you write up a web page for oneirishrover, on all this fascinating material about the family roots (referred to above)

  2. And William, the Neely family (not to be confused with the Neill family) appear further up your Armstrong line. This is a distant branch in my particular tree, so I haven’t researched it in great detail.

  3. Thanks Barry. I didn’t know Neely appeared further up the Armstrong line.

So, if one goes back far enough, Neely’s appear on both my maternal and my paternal trees.

  4. As we have all come to understand, the fascinating beauty of the entangled families around the Eden / Tamlaght O’Crilly / Innisrush / Lislea / Ballymacpeake / etc townlands is that although they have migrated to all corners of the world, the original families remain close neighbours.
Your grandmother was an Armstrong. Confusingly, her mother was also an Armstrong, and one of her sisters married a William James Neely. They had loads of children. I haven’t researched this far away from my family lines in great detail, but others have photographs of the gravestones. It won’t take long.

    1. My grandparents both had Armstrong in their Grt grandparents line
My grandfather was Thomas John Neely ,his mother ,grandmother?,they are the Mayogney Neelys connected to the Tivaconaway Neelys and the Ahoghill Neely,,,,,,Lennox,,,,McKay,,,,
Grandmother Ellen Neely Nee Stewart ,her Armstrong was Mayogney area connected to Wallace ,,,Mayberry,,,Campbell,,,,workman,,,,,Gordon,,,,

    2. This is my grandfather’s Neelys,Armstrong,,,The W.J Neely is my Mayogney Neely immediate lineage buried at Tamlaght O’Crilly higher graveyard.
My grandfather’s sister Margaret Neely Married Archibald Barkley ,he must have died young for she went to USA ,there she took out citizenship on the form was Hugh Morrison,,,also married into Neely,,,,,,she then came back to Ireland where she married Joseph Armstrong who was also marked as Mayogney ( he was in USA also ,they came home to marry in Ireland)
I used to visit them on my trips

  5. In terms of the various Mulholland households, that once were there in Eden/Ballymacpeake, it’s a ghost town now. My cousin Richard’s house and across the street Pearl’s daughter. Richard’s mum is at top of the hill.

Thanks for doing the Armstrong research, Barry. Very interesting.

Yes, the Armstrongs were married in to the Mulhollands on two different fronts – my paternal grandmother was Armstrong….and my paternal grandfather’s sister married J Armstrong from Greenlough (Innisrush).

  6. ‘Oh, what a tangled web ….’!!! Is there any family in the Bann Valley that hasn’t married into several others at one time or another? It’s what makes the family history of this area so fascinating as it weaves in and out of the same lines. Neelys, Armstrongs, Mulhollands and several others all connected in different ways in different generations. Worse than unravelling a fairisle jumper!!
