Ahoghill is about five miles from Portglenone and, in the other direction, is some four miles from Ballymena.

Saint Colmanell’s Church of Ireland is located on Church Street in Ahoghill.  Despite travelling through the village many thousands of times, for study, work and leisure, this remarkably was my first ever time on Church Street.

There are two additional church premises to see on the street.  As you walk up the street, you will initially encounter what is known locally as the Old Church Yard (on your left), then some yards later Trinity Church (again on the left side of the street) and ultimately Saint Colmanell’s church (again on the left, at the top of the hill and around a corner). The church is grouped with Portglenone Church of Ireland, and they share a rector.

The church setting is beautiful. The church, with it’s wonderful spire, is set in a delightfully serene landscape. I initially took photographs at the back of the church, where the graveyard is located.  Subsequently I got some decent photos of the front of the church – getting the view below, by crouching low at the church entrance (trying to get a view between the trees that line both sides of the driveway).

Construction of the Church in 1863

The foundation stone for the church was laid by Mr’s O’Neill of Shanes Castle (wife of the Reverend William O’Neill) on an apparently delightful sunny Tuesday 4th August 1863.

The Ballymena Observer at the time noted that: “For a long time past, there has been a pressing necessity for a greater amount of church accommodation in that parish. The funds for the new erection were raised chiefly by voluntary subscriptions, collected by the unwearied diligence of the Reverend Alfred Lee, the Parochial incumbent, and the site was kindly granted by the Reverend Robert Rowan of Mount Davys.”

On the day that the foundation stone was laid, 4th August 1863, a morning service was held at the old church – with a reading by the previously mentioned Reverend William O’Neill of Shane’s Castle. He was helped by the Dean of Connor, and the Reverend Lee. The sermon was subsequently delivered by the Dean of Down, from the text of Ist Samuel vii. verse 12: “Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.”

At the end of the service, a collection was taken, and the monies received were submitted to the new church construction fund.

The reverends and their congregation, subsequently proceeded the short distance to the location of the new church, where, according to the Ballymena Observer: “a silver trowel, bearing a suitable inscription, was presented to Mrs O’Neill, who gracefully proceeded to adjust the foundation stone, after which she struck it three times, and said, “To the Glory of God, and in the name of the ever blessed Trinity, I lay this stone.”  The dedication was read by Mr. William Millar, senior churchwarden; the ceremonies were followed by a hymn, sung by the assembled multitude, and the final benediction was then pronounced.

A complimentary address from the parishioners — beautifully grossed on vellum, illuminated, and magnificently bound in book form — was subsequently read and presented to the respected Rector of the parish, the Reverend Alfred T. Lee, who was also presented with an affectionate address by a deputation on behalf of the male and female Sunday schools…..on the conclusion of the proceedings, a large number of the aristocracy and gentry (some 80 in number) adjourned to the Rectory, where, a handsome marquee which had been erected on the lawn, they partook of sumptuous repast, comprising every delicacy of the season.”

The oldest death that I could find on a gravestone in the churchyard, was that of the Reverend Edward Hudson. He had formerly been rector of this parish and died in 1804.  Next was Hester MacManus who died in 1812, and then her husband Alexander MacManus (the late Lieutenant Colonel of the Antrim Militia) who died 1817.  Alexander Bryan died in 1838.
