This photo was probably taken in Portstewart, in the early 1950s.

It contains many friends, indeed many siblings.  Ian Bloomfield, Lottie McCaughern (nee Mulholland), John Crockett, Rita Sufferin (nee Bloomfield), Sammy Mulholland, Bobby Armstrong, Maisie Kelso, Richard Mulholland.  Lottie, Sammy and Richard were siblings – as were Ian and Rita Bloomfield.

My father would often talk of the ‘Big Weekend‘ in Portstewart.  It was a big thing each year – most probably, the biggest thing in the social calendar.  It occurred on the last Sunday of each September.  Buses and trains would offer special  discounted fares.  The farming community was able to finally relax and celebrate, with the harvest finally in.  Everyone for many miles around, would put on their best attire, get dollied up, and make their way to Portstewart. The North Antrim coast would be choc-a-bloc with people.

This photograph may well have been taken on a Big Weekend at the Port.
